Tonic’s mission is to offer innovative, creative music to longtime fans and to new audiences. We hope to provide a home for adventurous artists to feel comfortable and to experiment.

John Scott and Melissa Caruso Scott founded Tonic with two other partners in the Winter of 1997. Our first music series began in the Spring of 1998. Along with presenting some of New Yorks most creative up and coming musicians we offered film, comedy and theatre. That Summer after a festival curated by John Zorn, John and Melissa Scott, bought at their partners and decided to focus mainly on the music. For the first several years Tonic was curated by various musicians including Dave Douglas, Derek Bailey, Ikue Mori, Susie Ibarra, Thurston Moore and Vernon Reid. In more recent years the club had done its’ own booking, providing a welcoming venue for avant garde, jazz, electronic, pop, rock, chamber other experimental musicians to play.
