To present exhibitions, performances, musical events, readings, and panel discussions by and with emerging or under-recognized artists to stimulate dialogue about the contemporary arts, to make artistic projects more accessible to the public, to encourage collaborations among different creative disciplines, to provide a venue in which artists, performers and musicians may realize ambitious projects, to educate the public about the contemporary arts in the immediate area of the Lower East Side, Soho, Tribeca, Chinatown, as well as throughout the five bouroughs of New York.

Our doors opened in the fall of 1991. The founder, Timothy U. Nye, was interested in exploring ideas in contemporary abstract painting and therefore sought a location in which he could create shows and atmosphere that would stimulate discussion about the medium and its current trends. He rented a second floor loft space in Soho that was once a thread waxing factory-cleaned the floors, painted the walls, hung paintings, placed sculpture- and in the following eight months exhibited both one-person and group shows of abstract work. No sooner had eight months passed when it became clear that there was a strong interest in having the space present projects that served an entire community, not just those indvividuals with a commitment to abstraction but also those with a commitment to the contemporary arts as a whole. In 1992 Thread Waxing Space became a non-profit educational facility recognized by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York. And by the spring, we were presenting group exhibitions of all mediums; by the fall, we started to use the space as a forum in which artists from different disciplines could collabortae on projects; and by the winter we had come full circle ending the year with a one-person show of abstract sculpture by an emerging artist.

Exhibitions have ranged over the ten year existence of Thread Waxing Space. Guest curated exhibitions and readings, to solo shows and muscial events. Thread Waxing held approximately twelve exhibitions a year, this does not include the various one - two day events and performances that occured throughout each season.
