2a. Mission Statement: 
The Present Group is working to find new and sustainable ways to fund and distribute artist projects. The Present Group was founded in 2006 by Eleanor and Oliver Wise out of the desire to create affordable and sustainable models for funding artists. In their first three years, their quarterly subscription art service has channeled over $20,000 toward funding artist projects, stipends, and development of critical essays. Their hosting project is yet another attempt to create a sustainable revenue stream for artist grants.

Sept. 2006 - organization founded as art subscription service March 2007 - first piece out to subscribers Spring 2007 - part of Collective Foundation’s show at YBCA: Speaking the Art World into Existence Spring 2008 - spoke at Headlands Center for the Arts: The Emerging Art Market Fall 2008 - received Southern Exposure’s Alternative Exposure Grant Fall 2009 - first Art Fair (E|AB fair, NYC) Spring 2010 - started Web Hosting program to create artist grants

We publish one artist project that results in multiple parts (either an edition, a document of a performance, or parts of the project as a whole) per season. We also interview the artists and commission a critique of each work and send that in a little publication alongside each work.

There is the threat that we will burn out. We have run this voluntarily with the hope that eventually we will turn a profit. Our goals are shifting slightly...we want to keep finding new models though we no longer feel like we have to only do it through the subscription format. We have wanted to spread the idea of the subscription as a funding model, and that is working. When we started, there weren’t any that we could find. Now there are 8 art subscriptions throughout the country that we know of.
