The mission of the Dilexi Gallery was to provide an exhibition space for leading avant-garde visual artists during the years 1958-1970, and to make their works available to a wide public through exhibitions, publishing of catalogs, selling to collections public and private, and encouraging exposure of their work through other galleries, museums, and other public venues.

The Dilexi Gallery was founded in 1958 in San Francisco by Jim Newman and Robert Alexander, who left the project the following year. It remained open until 1970 with three separate locations in the city. It presented the works of many leading visual artists of the time, including, but not limited to, Jeremy Anderson, Hassel Smith, Alvin Light, Leslie Kerr, Craig Kauffman, Deborah Remington, Jay de Feo, Roy De Forest, Edward Moses, H. C. Westermann, Jess, Sidney Gordin, Gary Molitor, Ron Nagle, Richard Shaw, Robert Morris and Charles Ross.
