The Contemporary Art Workshop (CAW) is an independent project space, dedicated to promoting artists with proven skill and drive in their field. Since 1949, we have exhibited and supported studio space for photographers, sculptors, fiber artists, installation artists, video artists, painters, and printmakers, each of whom shares bold ideas and a commitment to artistic excellence. CAW has given exhibition opportunities to hundreds of now-successful artists at the beginning stages of their careers, including Ellen Lanyon, Jim Lutes, Seymour Rosofsky, Jin Soo Kim, Didier Nolet, Doug Jeck, Joe Seigenthaler, Cat Chow, Tim Lowly, Anna Kunz, Danielle Tegeder, Frank Trankina, Su En Wong and Robert McCauley. Another artist, Jim Lutes, to whom Contemporary Art Workshop gave his first exhibition opportunity upon leaving school in 1979, has gone on to become the Dean of the Painting Department at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has repeatedly testified to the value of the Contemporary Art Workshop over the years, and we are fortunate to find ourselves, 57 years old as an organization, continuing to support successive generations of artists. The majority of our artists are graduates of local institutions including the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, University of Illinois at Chicago, Northern Illinois University, Northwestern University, and UIU-C. However, a degree from a prestigious school it is not a requirement. CAW’s focus is on discovering and presenting quality work by dedicated, under-represented artists, regardless of their background. A unique aspect of the submission process for artists applying to the Gallery Program is that we will seriously consider any and all work submitted. CAW’s staff evaluates hundreds of proposals, slides, images, and artworks every year. Upon reviewing each proposal the Director and Assistant Director conduct interviews with the candidates for solo shows in our Gallery Program, who are then chosen based on the quality of their work. We are dedicated to connecting community artists with community audiences.
2c. Exhibition / Programming / Publishing History.: 
Based in a former dairy, Contemporary Art Workshop’s facility houses 2 separate galleries. Each space features a solo exhibition by artists who have applied to our Gallery Program*. Exhibitions typically run for 4 to 5 weeks. Viewers from the community and across the region are invited to experience the work Mondays through Fridays, from 12:30 to 5:30 PM, and on Saturdays from 12:00 to 5:00 PM. Each year we feature 7 solo exhibitions in each gallery and 2 summer group shows, for a total of 16 exhibitions featuring at least 35 artists. Multiplied over the course of 57 years, we have exposed the citizens of the region to some thousands of artists who have made the culture of the Chicagoland area and the Midwest the rich mosaic that it is today.
