2a. Mission Statement: 
The AWC focuses on a group of mainly North American writers and artists, most of whom became active in the 1970’’s. Working in a wide variety of genres, including poetry, visual poetry, word art, sound and performance poetry, collaborations, artists’’ books, and new forms and media, they are each quite unique and not associated with any of the prevailing literary or institutional establishments of the day. As with avant garde movements throughout history, this group maintains extensive international contacts and activities, including collaborating, often across multiple languages. The AWC is the only collection anywhere that so extensively archives the publications, artwork, manuscripts, correspondence, recordings and much more of a literary-artistic culture that is changing the nature of language and art.
